High School

On Friday, August 19th the MAK varsity boys soccer team kicked off their season against an alumni team bolstered by willing members of the community.  The varsity boys started on the front foot with their youthful energy and excitement fueled by the prospect of starting a season without covid restrictions.  Slick passing and strong running off the ball began to create chances for the varsity boys but they were kept at bay by a strong showing in goal from new staff member Aaron Ting and assistant varsity Matt Seybert mopping up the loose bits.  The first goal came courtesy of a marauding run out of the defense by Jeffrey Shen who squared the ball to senior James Andrews to fire on target with just enough power to see it squirm over the line.  While the alumni team contained the experience of returning players like Eden Liu, Parker Shen, Andrew Chen and Koki Shibata they were largely kept at bay by the tenacious defending of the varsity Sharks and some confident goalkeeping by returning Sr. Joseph Tsai.  Despite this, the alumni were able to find an equalizer before half time.  After some trickery inside the box from staff member Euston Slabbert a perfectly weighted pass found its way to the top of the goal box and onto the right foot of varsity head coach Nathan Owen who managed to put just enough power and angle on it for it to find its way into the net.  With scores tied up after the first half the varsity boys came out and started the second half with a renewed vigor slicing through the tiring alumni team like a knife through hot butter.  Chance after chance went by the wayside as some early season finishing woes plagued the varsity sharks.  After a long period of sustained pressure junior John Kwon slid a pass through the defense to sophomore Ayrton Huan who calmly slotted the ball into the back post to give the varsity boys the lead.  As fatigue began to set in for both teams the alumni were able to run their deep bench and were able to create chances of their own with Koki Sibata testing the focus of varsity goalkeeper Joseph Tsai with some cheeky long range attempts.  It was not until the 70th minute that the sharks defense made a single error, leaving coach Seybert unmarked in the goal box on a corner kick who finished his chance with aplomb.  While the Sharks were the most likely to go and find the game winner the referee called time 10 minutes later to end the game, final score 2-2.  It was a wonderful first performance from the varsity boys with plenty of positives and a great way to start the season.
